Behind the scenes: Buenos Aires ePrix

What could be nicer than a walk in the park? A walk in the park that leads into the FIA Formula E paddock! Laid out and opened to the public in 2003, the Parque Micaela Bastidas in Buenos Aires was the venue for the fourth round of the most innovative racing series in the world. 5.4 hectares of greenery, 40,000 trees, 36 cars, 18 drivers: the perfect ingredients for the first Formula E race of 2016.

Before the racing action commenced, DHL offered media representatives and guests the opportunity to take an exclusive look behind the scenes of the FIA Formula E. First stop, the garage used by Team ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport. The two drivers, Lucas di Grassi and Daniel Abt, answered everyone’s questions with courtesy and in detail.

“Argentina has such a great motorsport history, starting with the great Juan Manuel Fangio,” enthused di Grassi, who would subsequently celebrate a fourth podium finish in four races. “The atmosphere is amazing and the support we get from the fans is fantastic.”

Even before the 17,000 spectators flooded into the Parque Micaela Bastidas for Saturday’s race, the DHL guests had already got a feel for the vibrant atmosphere within Formula E. The preparation of the cars, the construction of the eVillage, the track inspection – the teams and officials were working flat out to give fans a very special experience.

“Argentina is a sports mad country, but the FIA Formula E is something completely new,” said Alejandro Jasiukiewicz, Country Manager DHL Express Argentina. “The reputation of the series is built on sustainability, innovation and of course entertainment. This fits perfectly with the values of DHL, and it’s a great privilege to be one of the pioneers of the sport. It would be hard to imagine a more beautiful venue than this park in the middle of Puerto Madero.”

On Saturday, the fans saw one of the most exciting races of the season. Sam Bird fended off the challenge of the pursuing pack right up to the finish line to claim his first win of the season. The trophy was presented by Argentinean supermodel Valeria Mazza – yet another visual treat. After the race with the sun still shining down, the fans carried on partying in the paddock.

“The fans in Argentina are among the most passionate and best informed in the world,” said FIA Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag. “Seeing and hearing their response to our fully electrified racing series was a massive affirmation of what we have created. As long as Formula E is around, we would like Buenos Aires to be a permanent fixture on our calendar.”
