FORMULA E: PUNTA DEL ESTE PREVIEW

Lucas di Grassi in action the 2014 Putrajaya ePrix

Lucas di Grassi races by DHL and #FanBoost branding at the 2014 Putrajaya ePrix.

Round 3 of the FIA Formula E Championship – the Punta Del Este ePrix – is less than 48 hours away. Here’s the latest to get you e-xcited!

This weekend, Formula E travels to the glamourous resort of Punta del Este in Uruguay – a country that is no stranger to motor racing. In fact, the sport dates back over 100 years, and since the 1950, Uruguay has been a big part of world motorsports. Read Formula E’s INSIGHT for a complete look at the history of motor racing in this South American Country.

Two races, twice the e-xcitment
Rounds 1 (Beijing) and 2 (Putrajaya) saw two drivers jump out in front, each with one win and one podium finish. Audi Sport ABT’s Lucas di Grassi took the first-ever Formula E checkered flag in China, followed by a second placing showing in Malaysia, while Virgin Racing’s Sam Bird followed his third place finish in Beijing with a win in Putrajaya. Di Grassi leads Bird by a mere 3 points – 43 to 40 – with a pack of four from four different teams chasing from 22 points back.

The man in third – Andretti’s Franck Montagny – has been arguably the most exciting driver to watch so far, pushing hard to second in Beijing but taking too many risks in Malaysia and finishing outside the points.

We should definitely be keeping our eyes peeled on e.dams Renault’s Nicolas Prost in Punta del Este this weekend. The Frenchman has taken both pole positions in qualifying, not to mention producing the heart-stopping accident in the closing seconds of the Beijing ePrix that (thankfully) cost him nothing more than a 10-place grid penalty in Putrajaya. A fantastic 4th means he’s definitely top dog in the chaser group.

Speaking of Frenchman, the Andretti Formula E Team recently announced that Jean-Éric Vergne will drive for their squad in Punta del Este. The 24-year-old, who has three Formula One seasons under his belt, says the race, “will be like a journey into the unknown.”

FanBoost
Formula E is decidedly unique. It is, after all, the first ever all-electric international car racing series. #FanBoost adds to the sport’s uniqueness because there is no other sport in the world that allows fans to play an active role in the action.  Want to know how it works?
