Oscar for DiCaprio - impassioned appeal about climate change

He’s finally done it! Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar on Sunday night for his role in the blockbuster, The Revenant, clinching the best male actor award for the American star - a win that was long overdue according to millions of fans around the world.

As he celebrated his triumph, DiCaprio used his acceptance speech in Los Angeles to raise issues concerning the protection of the environment primarily. The actor has been an environmental advocate for many years and also promotes sustainability along with Formula E!

DiCaprio is a co-founder of the Venturi Formula E team. Since 2016, the Hollywood star has also chaired the Sustainability Committee of the world’s most innovative racing series. Other members include Ken Allen, CEO of DHL Express and FIA Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag.

As hundreds of millions of TV viewers around the world watched the tremendous 88th Academy Awards evening, DiCaprio said: „Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating.

We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people out there who would be most affected by this. For our children’s children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed.“

DiCaprio concluded his speech with these fine words that are sure to find resonance for a long time: „Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted.“
