Talking Fashion Retail and Leadership at NYFW, Sept 8

New York Fashion Week is the pinnacle for designers looking to break into the market in the U.S. That's why it played such a central role in the inaugural DHL Exported competition launched in collaboration with IMG Fashion earlier this year. Offering four winning designers the support of DHL as they take their brand global, the program included runway slots at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York for both the Spring/Summer 2015 and Autumn/Winter 2015 for one of those designers.

Milan-based designer Francesca Liberatore wowed the judges with her passion and attention to detail, something those in New York will see for themselves on September 8, 2014 at 2 p.m. EST when she holds her first U.S. studio show.

Hot on the heels of Liberatore's showing, DHL is holding a DHL Exported leadership panel at 4:30 p.m. in the Southern Courtyard at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week to give budding designers insights into growing their business internationally. Moderated by Teri Agins, columnist for The Wall Street Journal and author of “The End of Fashion: How Marketing Changed Fashion Forever,” the panel will have industry experts sharing their real-world expertise to help budding fashion enterprises learn what it takes to create successful, international fashion brands. These experts include Nicholas and Christopher Kunz, the designers behind Nicholas K, the Milan winners of the DHL Exported program; Nichole Miller, one of the world’s most successful designers and Gary Wassner, Co-CEO of Hilldun, the well-known factoring firm for the fashion industry; Jarrad Clark, Vice President and Global Creative Director at IMG; and Karsten Aufgebauer, General Manager at DHL Express U.S.

Panel discussion topics include current trends shaping the fashion industry, how to secure financing and overcome challenges of expanding internationally, how designers can market and protect their brands abroad, as well as the importance of working with a knowledgeable logistics and business partner when doing business across borders.

“Becoming an internationally known brand doesn’t happen by accident, and it isn’t all about the artistic vision and designs,” says Jarrad Clark, Vice President and Global Creative Director at IMG. “Knowing how to seek out growth opportunities, how to find key business allies and handle the business aspect of a fashion label or retailer are integral considerations for any successful brand.”
